"Then, his voice sinking to a whisper, he hissed out ‘Your end will be bitter as wormwood and sharp as a two-edged sword. Your feet shall go down to death, and your steps take hold on hell.’”

The Lodger is a 1913 novel, based on the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888, by the English writer Marie Adelaide Belloc Lowndes.

The book follows the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bunting, the owners of a bankrupt London lodge, who see Mr. Sleuth, their only long-time visitor, as their opportunity to salvage their business. The pair becomes suspicious of this new arrival when the latest killings happen in the nearby communities.
